My Visit to There Inc.

by xThor

Since I first started to play in There back in March 2004 I have always had my own perception of the staff.  Like most, I always believed they were a huge corporation who's main objective is to make money.  I believed they didn't care that much about our community and had their own agenda which was not in our best interest, but theirs.  As I met them and got to know them my perception changed, yet I was always cautious.  Contrary to the beliefs of a few, I am not their sheep nor brown nosing them.  As time passed, I began to trust them and like them.  I finally grew to enjoy their company and support for our community as their actions dictated to me their genuine concerns for our community.

As I got myself more involved in community projects, my interactions with them grew.  A relationship was born and a level of trust developed. I was fortunate to be invited to visit their offices for the Opening Ceremonies of the Wild, Wild West Event.  I accepted the invitation and the opportunity to see for myself what they do behind the scenes.  I had no idea what to expect but I was excited about the trip.

When I arrived I was greeted with a warm hello.  It felt like I was finally seeing good friends who I have not seen in a long while.  Their was excitement in the air as all the staff was waiting for the opening ceremonies.  They each came to meet me and the ones who have already met me, greeted me as an old friend.  I felt accepted and welcomed.  This was just another day at the office to them and the only difference was the excitement of this mega event.  They were proud parents anxiously waiting to see their children perform.  Each and every member of the staff was beaming with excitement,  smiles were painted on each of their faces as the time grew closer.

Some were standing over my shoulder watching, while others quickly logged in to attend the opening ceremonies.  They were impressed with the efforts and creativity of all involved with the Wild, Wild West Event.  They were amazed by the talents of the developers involved and couldn't wait to play with these new toys, even if it was just for a short while.  Questions were being asked and laughter filled the air as they watched and played.  I have never witness so much excitement from a team in an office as I was witnessing at that moment.  Yet I could not help but to think as I observed them interacting with each other that this is not a team.  In business we talk about team work, what I witness was a family who cares about their baby, our community.

When one of them gives up their personal time and pulls several all-nighters to make sure developers get all their new designs on time for this event and at the same time ensuring other developers are not excluded, this is caring.  Giving up vacation time on top of that is also caring.  Everything I heard during my visit was about the community and what can they do to make it better.  That was the attitude of this family and their purpose.  Each and everyone of them is to be commended for their devotion, dedication, talents, patience, professionalism and caring.  They put their hearts and soul into what they do, to ensure we are pleased.

I had so much fun talking to each one of them, all eager to answer all my questions and eager to ask me questions and listen to what I had to say.  I felt at home with them and a part of their family, which in reality is our family.  They were all very busy with their responsibilities, yet they took the time to visit with me.  I was told about about a few things with excitement and giddiness, which I will not repeat, you will all just have to wait and see.  When these people put in 10 to 12 hour days to make our world a better place for us, they care.  I can never thank them enough for allowing me into their offices and spending time with them.

As I left the offices I realized one thing, I will never again see them the same.  My perception of them changed.  I have a greater appreciation and respect for all they do for us and my trust in them grew.  My attitude also changed, now instead of asking for this or that, it has become "what can I do to help."  I know they want to do all they can for us with the limited resources they have.  I also know our community has a multitude of talented people who are willing to help.  I can see our community growing and becoming better as a result of their efforts and caring, yet I also see they can sure use our help.  One thing I know we can do is very simple, when you see them just walk up and say Thank You for all you do for us.  If anyone ever deserved a pat on the back is this group of talented and caring staff.  Thank You very much for all you do for us There Staff.
