TUMA
TOWER
by Archie
Tuma Tower, I recommend a visit
this truly remarkable and historical place in There- Currently, Meret holds
its ownership and some plans to be unveiled in the future. Meret’s Tuma
Tower is currently an inviting and intriguing park. Once owned by Tangerine,
when There-books had much longer time limits, it was a “super-library”
loaded with books of fiction and non fiction, tons of cool poetry, a newbie
center, and links to places all over There.
Tangerine worked at this Cultural
Center like a full time job, and hired employees to help out as well. She
spent so much time and effort, this place was a real hot spot. It’s original
design purpose was a paintball game zone- I’m not sure how much PB is played
there now, if any…here’s what went down in the There Official Forums…
Archie:
yes- it used to be the site of the
biggest library project in There-
Thanks to Tangy! (hi Tangy! you there?)
who owns it now?..and is anything slated for it's future
Tangy almost got the game junk shut off, then boom -black friday hit,
books got changed-library closed, but place is still very cool and it would
really be cool to have stuff happen there...(in my opinion...)
ensigandy:
Oh woah total trip back to my
early day's, all I want to add to this thread was THAT WAS (when under her
care) the Best Newbie Welcoming I got plus all the intelligence, lol, an
non-sense... It's sadly missed by from what I've talked with people, the
masses... 'sad tis no more...
Rudy246:
Ah man. way back in the day.
When those 10 hour trials from the try-o-matics were all i had to wear lol.
I remember that place very well from when i was new. Wouldn't mind it
getting back up on its feet, but it really is a paintball zone, its not that
great of a welcoming centre if there are paintballs flying all around =P
There are lots of newbie centers though. Like the one Aliv has, it
has tons of scrolls, tryomatics, signs and stuff to help out new members.
etc
Tangerine:
Thanks Archie you were there a
lot! To tell you the truth Bartalk is only on late at night, but he has
tried. I will be doing one for someone and have been approached. This place
will be for reading only and unlike anything else, books have to be renewed
in order for anyone to get credit for authorship. Next month or so, I will
start one. They are a lot of work. I am biding my time till funds/credit
card is once again in my hands. I have often thought that it is worthwhile,
and I have been gathering names of those who enjoy writing.
No, I am not a librarian of any type. I just like to read and enjoy people
who are able to write... be it poems, stories, quotes. or whatever. Thank
you for you kind words. It's in the works unless someone else want to try,
and that is fine, but it's a lot of unanswered work and it is constant. (Muahhhhhh)
Meret:
Hmm, Archie, you don't like my
permanent park :) Hopefully I'll be able to accomplish my goals for the zone
in the very near future. Feel free to chase me down if you want any
post-Tangerine history.
Elaur:
Could you give a thumbnail sketch
of what the library was like for us newer members? I also thought this was
the idea of wordgrove.
francis7:
Before it was Tangerine's Library,
Disky operated the zone as a variety of things. She attempted to do fashion
shows and a variety of other things including racing obstacle courses, but
the limit on people was very disheartening. Even with vehicles turned off
the max number of people is 25. With vehicles turned on that number drops
rapidly!
Disky really loved the structure of the building, and she too wanted to be
able to turn off the displays all over the screen. It is one of the most
magnificent structures in There. However it did not make a very good
paintball arena. Often I ended up face down stuck to the floor after being
shot into a wall or being shot into one.
Disky, as far as I know was the first operator (besides There) I do not
think this zone was operated by anyone in PBII.
She operated the zone for quite a long time (not sure how many months) then
sold it to Tangerine and she moved to another zone that allowed more people
in.
I am excited to hear about Tangerine's new library project and I can't wait
to see what meret is planning either!
Archie:
Meret!
hey the park there now is very cool! I'm just a sentimental fool for the
cultural center as a well known spot to drop books and poems for the many
visitors who came by constantly.
It is a fascinating building to explore in its own right-
so I guess it makes my inquiry a two-pronged question...
-what may the future bring to Tuma Tower, and (-perhaps un-related-)
how/where can writers gather to share as a reliable reading spot? -
yes, Wordgrove is also a very cool spot...that's true...and thanks to
Bartalk we haven't lost a connection to Therebook writers altogether-
There is a great place for writing, it would be great if somehow time limits
weren't so short outside of one's own PAZ, or if there were other specific
places where they could be out longer.
Tangerine:
Yes Francis, it was disky's
because I was new and bought it from her. I traded with Meret because I got
tired of the Screen Junk which they had promised to remove prior to Friday
13. Merit got excited that they even managed to find time to fix his
problem, but he was jazzed they fixed it.
I am sure he now agrees. If they would take away the screen junk, I would
gladly take it back even though it's a full time job to keep books in so
that people get their reading credits. It was well worth it to those that
write and what a way to keep up your talent! I hope someday they will let
that darling little place be used for books again. I paid out quite a bit
but it was visited all day and far more use was had with books than with
paint. Other places were good at that. Meanwhile I would gladly start up a
library again somewhere else... although wow, it would be nice if it could
be done there again. Such a perfect use for that spot.
Meret:
Stayed tuned. There maybe
something interesting in the near future although I don't expect it to
return to a library again. Authors were always permitted to leave their
books there, but that dropped off over the last year. Running a library or
culture center takes much more time than I have and I have to admit, I loved
the books spread out among the grounds to promote people wandering the zone,
I never really like them within the building proper.
I prefer it someday to be restored to a social place. A place to explore. A
place to hold art exhibits or weddings.
It's interesting that it was originally conceptualized as a shopping center
according to what I read on it.
Just working when 'someday' will come.
( Thanks to everyone who
contributed this bit of historical research! Archie )
