Twinkling Ny

By Nyllone

I have always wanted to be an Island Guide even before it was possible for me to apply.  I was still very much a "bronze" when I thought of it.  I have always wanted to play it forward and help new members in their way around the world.  Thanks to the first nicest people I've met that inspired me to help.  There were times when I would play IG and help new members in the spawn areas like Fisher and Paiz.  Asking new members like "Hey, do you know that you can change your clothes and hair for free and wear it for four hours?"  And of course, they loved it.  Some were even so grateful that they'd tell me, "Thank you so much, Nyllone!  You're the nicest person I've ever met!"  Erm, I was the first person they usually meet then. :).  Then again, they usually forget all about me the next day.  But it doesn't really matter.

When I turned "silver", the desire to be an IG intensified, but I wasn't skilling up very much in any activity.  I had no leadership skills which were needed to apply for IG.  It wasn't really a race for me to skill up, I was just enjoying my stay in the world being with my closest buds.  Besides I felt I have so much to learn, and so much to discover, that being an IG could take a back seat.  I even told IG Phonk once:  I can never be a good IG.  I don't have the answers to all my questions.  But he replied:  At least you know all the questions!  :P

I started skilling up in my leadership skills (with the help of close buddies and more nice people) and worked hard for it.  And when I hit what was required (Expert Event Host and Avid Newbie Helper), I applied immediately.  And then aimed for "gold".  Finally, when I got my bacio, I relaxed a bit, and waited for the IG classes.  Going through the process of being an IG requires a lot of hard work, determination and sacrifice.  (Imagine attending my second class at 12:00-1:30AM -my time.  But I still think it was better than attending the 4:00-5:30AM class. 'doh)  But it was all worth it, I am now an official Island Guide.

"I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until finally I became that person.  Or (s)he became me."
- Cary Grant

Sure, I got a star and a shirt.  They are perks of being an IG.  But I aimed for this not because of that - I just want to be there "officially", to help, and not play pretend anymore.  :)  If you need help, feel free to ask me and I will try the best way I can.   'tu
