FARMTOWN

By Geea

Mostly everyone you know one line has a myspace account, twitters or has a Facebook account.  I joined Facebook because my brother was bugging me to do so.  I got into it thinking this is cool I can connect with old friends, friends from back home and even my friends from  High School.  So I became one of millions of Facebook users.

It was great at first I talked to my friends back in NY and connected with some old friends from High School.  You do the usual what have you been up to blah blah blah then after a week or so you have nothing more to say.  Then I started to notice my There friends were sending friend requests and most of my Facebook activity is between me and my There friends who I happen to see and talk to everyday either in There or on Yahoo.  So much for old connections.

So what I’m I blabbing about?  Hold on I’m getting to it.  There is this little application in Facebook called Farmtown which is taking on a life of its own.  It’s a 2d application, not much to it but the premise will addict you.  You get some land, you get some coin and you start planting your crops.  As you plant and harvest you get more and more money which you can buy things from the store.  Friends can send you animals and trees for your farm and you become obsessed. Much like There you want that house and you have to save up at least 70k to get one.  You can add animals, fences, wagons, barns etc.    Now Farmtown is interactive  you can chat through chat bubbles or chat box.  You go up levels and each level unlocks more goodies you can buy.  If you have someone harvest for you (you hire them) you can make more money and the person who is harvesting will make money too.  While Farmtown has no beggars like There has, it does have people who are always asking for a job.  It also has an ignore feature, yay!.  You can’t give or trade anything with another player but if you want you can buy money with paypal.

When your farm is harvested you go to the marketplace and sell your stuff you will see tones of toons looking for work.  Your friends can be your neighbors and you also gain points and money for visiting your friends farms and watering or raking leaves.

While There has nothing to worry about regarding Farmtown it is someplace else to go when There is doing client updates or down for maintenance.

While this may seem silly to some, it has become addicting and I find when I log in to There lately the conversation is about Farmtown and how people’s farms are doing and it is fun to see how creative people can be with their farms.

For Facebook it’s an interesting alterative, for me I was getting a little annoyed finding out every guy I thought was cute in High School is now gay and still has better hair than me.  So check out Farmtown next time There has a client update instead of crying about it in forums and get a life or get a farm.
