“Background/Foreground”- Music In There:
The Frustration Chronicles

We move from world to world…Reality, There, Reality, There…and in our travels, we hear lots and lots of background music playing. Well, Pinky, are you pondering what I’m pondering? Is the “background music” (that is way too loud and in way too many places), DRIVING US NUTS? I think so, and don’t think it’s very healthy.

OK let’s start with “R.L.” (real life)- Perhaps if we could voice our opinions in a survey…maybe something like this?

The worst first: (select response choice)

Do you like the background music of the (retail store/restaurant) you last visited?

-Yes, loved it – No, hated it - Don’t Care/Didn’t Notice, have become comfortably numb to the whole thing  (they have won, and I am their unwitting victim).

What kind of music was being played there?

___________________________fill in blank- for example - 80’s hits, 80’s hits, or 80’s hits, Smooth Jazz, or “Other” (note: yes, a few place do actually have decent music) Did the background in that place help you enjoy your visit?

-Yes  - No, It gave me a case of the “blahs”, and made want to RUN AWAY from there FAST- long before I was done with my visit (spending).

Can you think of a reason why the business management (which plays 80’s hits) would want you to have a “case of the blahs”?  (select as many as apply)

  1. To dull my senses, so I’ll be hypnotized into spending more?
  2. To get me to leave sooner, for security purposes?
  3. To mindlessly assume that I simply love hanging out there because the music is SO inspiring?
  4. To get me to leave sooner, so they wont see me hanging out there for very long

because they assume that 80’s hits fits the entire population perfectly.

  1. Because the management IS mindless and they could care less how the customers feel about being forced to hear overly loud 80’s hits in every store they walk in to.
  2. All of the above

And the solution is? Choices, choices, choices…(in one’s own PAZ anyways…)

Don’t! - Simply indulge in listening to “favorites”…over and over again until we become sick of them. (not an option) (why kill the things you love?)

Don’t! – We don’t want to hear deep, profound, emotionally heavy material while at work or shopping. (also not an option)

Theory- that if you continually listen to “favs” while doing something unpleasant, you will eventually associate that music with the unpleasant task).

Oh, what to do??

Do! – Give it a rest, turn the music off for a while!

Do! Play instrumental works at a low volume.

Do! Play other music you don’t hear as often, maybe Brazilian Jazz, Reggae, Classical, Nature sounds, etc…

But- Number One message to those responsible…if it really is meant to be “background” music then TURN IT DOWN- puh-lease! Have Mercy!

Of course if your doing a party or concert- that’s another ballgame altogether. If you have a “jazzy lounge” well, “when in Rome” play jazzy music…ok…fine! But who needs to hear the golden oldies over and over and over?

Dire Straights anyone?
