The last week was an exciting time for buggy enthusiasts. With the Hot August Nights theme in There, what would be more appropriate than buggies? The first night was the Buggy Show held at the Seattle Frontier Zone Rose recently wrote about. I was really amazed at the turnout. It was a lot of fun for me and I hope everyone who was there. On Wednesday Team ZMW sponsored Vintage Buggy Racing at the Team ZMW Raceway. It too was well attended, and we all got to check out some awesome buggies going back as far as the Splotch Buggy by Cloud130 owned by LossAngeles. There was a 5,000t prize given to the oldest buggy there, and he won it with the Splotch which was built on April 11, 2003. Second place went to Geoschroy with his buggy going back to May 2, 2003. There were many others that went back into 2003, and it was really interesting to see how much buggy design has changed since then.
One interesting tidbit I recently got from Sonny, is that buggies were first released to designers in January 2003, so there may be a few even older than those we saw on Wednesday. There were also some 50s themed buggies that came into world for Hot August Nights. It's important to note that the very first Bel Air buggy was done by Spyderbytez. It was introduced into the world on July 28, 2003. He limited it to 30, and it originally sold for 34,995t. I've known Spyder since my first month in There. JoeyG used to call us twins separated at birth! So when I decided to try my hand at this classic, I went into it knowing that I had a legend to live up to. Spyder liked it when he saw it, and he even has a copy for himself now.
ZMW also came out with 2 Kadallak models, the Elvis Pink Kadallak, and the 50s style Blue Kadallak. A few new techniques were tried with these including having the dash appear to mold around the sides.
I like working with new designers. I've enjoyed helping Shaeri out with her design classes at the UOT, and recently I've been talking with a new designer, lJordanl. His designs have really been coming along and when he showed my his latest, I knew I needed to add one to my collection. In my opinion, he's on his way to being a top buggy designer, and I want one of his early buggies while I can still afford it! His latest is the JVH Fishtail 06. It's limited to 5, priced at 25,000t, and as of this writing, there are only 4 left. I've been checking auctions for some other interesting buggies, but came across the Stratus hoverbikes. I couldn't resist, I HAD to check it out. The bike model was created by Phlit, and I have to say both he and the painter, Dusty, outdid themselves on this one. It's tight. The racers should love it but not being one, I'm not sure. One of these days I'll have to talk to my friend Ishmael55 and see if can help me learn how to race bikes.
I've been called “the King of Pink” (along with a few other things) so I was very happy to see the C25 Pink Nightmare from Colin25. Colin has been painting buggies for a long time, and I always enjoy seeing what he's going to come up with. This one should allow me to transfer the crown. I now dub Colin25 the new King of Pink!
Those of you following the There Fashion Challenge will be familiar with Kortt's work. For some it may come as a surprise that he also paints buggies. Anyone who's ever tried can tell you it's easier to paint a shiny new buggy than to make one that looks like a beater. Kortt took that challenge and created the FIXERUPPER. For me he brought it off well. This buggy truly looks like it needs a LOT of work. Great job as always, Kortt. That wraps it up for now. I'm back from a long absence, and I hope to get back on schedule with a regular column. |
